Where Faith in Christ Lays Hold of  Grace

Là où la Foi en Christ Saisit la Grâce

“ពេលដែលជំនឿលើព្រះគ្រីស្ទទទួលយកព្រះគុណ”

the meeting of grace and faith in christ

Ephesians 2:8-9

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Where faith in Christ lays hold of grace, Christian salvation is born: an unmerited gift from God (grace) grasped by human trust (faith). This moment transforms life and forms the foundation of the entire Christian experience.

Where faith in Christ lays hold of grace

Grace is God’s initiative. It is his free and unmerited love towards sinners. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God offers forgiveness of sins, reconciliation with Him, and eternal life. This grace cannot be earned or earned by human effort.

Faith is the human being’s response to this grace. She is the hand that grasps the gift of God. To believe is to place one’s trust in Jesus Christ, in his person and in his work accomplished on the cross, rather than in one’s own merits or one’s own works.

This is why the apostle Paul says:

“By grace have you been saved through faith. And it doesn’t come from you, it’s the gift of God. »

How is this work of salvation accomplished?

The Spirit of God acts first in the human heart. It reveals the holiness of God, the sin of man, and the love shown in Jesus Christ. Convinced by this work of the Spirit, the person responds with faith and repentance, that is to say, he turns to God by putting his trust in Jesus Christ.

This encounter with Christ profoundly transforms life. The believer receives new life, and this life naturally produces the fruits of obedience and good works. These works are not the cause of salvation; they are the result.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, You are the author and perfecter of my faith. I ask that You increase my faith, especially in seasons of doubt or hardship. Root and ground me deeply in Your love so that I may confidently trust in Your promises. Help me to keep my eyes fixed on You and to surrender my worries to Your capable hands.

In Your holy name, Amen!

II- Reflection

Where Faith in Christ Lays Hold of Grace

The Gospels record several encounters in which men and women saw their lives completely transformed by coming to Jesus in faith.
Among these biblical narratives, two illustrate the theme particularly clearly: “Where faith in Christ lays hold of grace.”

These two stories are very different, yet they lead to the same truth:
Salvation is a free gift from God, received through faith and not earned by works.
– The sinful woman demonstrates a faith that responds with love to the grace received.
– The thief on the cross shows that it is never too late to receive this grace.

1. The sinful woman: a faith that receives grace
Reading: Luke 7:36-50
The story:
Jesus is invited to dine at the home of Simon, a Pharisee.
During the meal, a woman known in the town as a sinner enters the house. She approaches Jesus, weeping; she wets His feet with her tears, wipes them with her hair, kisses them, and anoints them with perfume.
Simon is scandalized. In his view, a woman with such a reputation should never approach a man of God.
Jesus responds by telling the parable of the two debtors: two men owe money to their creditor, but both have their debts completely forgiven. Jesus then asks a question:
“Which of them will love him more?”
Simon answers: “The one to whom he forgave the larger debt.”
Jesus then shows that this woman demonstrates great love because she has understood the magnitude of the forgiveness she is receiving.
Then He declares to her:
“Your sins are forgiven… Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

The three fundamental expressions:

A- Grace: Faced with the Pharisee’s scorn, Jesus publicly defends this woman. He does not list her faults but offers her total and immediate forgiveness. Grace is revealed through this unconditional welcome and the restoration of her dignity.

B- Faith: This woman’s faith is not a theological statement, but an outpouring of love and gratitude. She comes to Jesus knowing she is unworthy, yet certain that she will find mercy with Him. Her tears and her perfume are tangible proof of her complete trust in Him.

C- Salvation: Jesus seals this encounter with two key phrases: “Her many sins have been forgiven, for she has loved much,” and then, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

What does this story teach us?
The woman is not forgiven because she weeps, pours out perfume, or performs a religious act. All these actions are the visible expression of a faith that surrenders to Jesus.

In other words:
It is not her works that produce forgiveness; it is the grace of Jesus that produces love, gratitude, and adoration within her.
Her love is therefore not the cause of her salvation, but the fruit of the salvation she receives.
The more she understands the greatness of grace, the more her love for Jesus grows.

Lesson:
Faith does not consist merely of believing certain truths about Jesus.
True faith consists of coming to Him just as you are, acknowledging your need for forgiveness, receiving His grace, and entrusting your entire life to Him.

2. The thief on the cross: a faith that grasps grace until the very last breath
Reading: Luke 23:39-43
The story:
Two criminals are crucified alongside Jesus.
Both are condemned for their own crimes.
One mocks Jesus and asks Him to save him from death.
The other humbly acknowledges his guilt:
“We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve; but this man has done nothing wrong.”
Then he addresses this simple prayer to Jesus:
“Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”
Jesus answers him immediately:
“Today you will be with Me in paradise.”

The three fundamental expressions:

A- Grace: The thief no longer has time to change his life, right his wrongs, or perform good deeds. He is at the end of his earthly life. Yet, the grace of Jesus transcends his condemnation. Without hesitation or condition, Jesus opens the gates of the Kingdom to him.

B- Faith: The thief’s faith is extraordinary in its timing. He sees Jesus nailed to a cross, in agony and rejected by all, yet he discerns the eternal King in Him. His faith finds expression in this simple prayer: “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” He believes in Jesus’s authority beyond death.

C- Salvation: Jesus immediately answers him with an absolute promise of salvation: “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

What does this account teach us?
The thief no longer has any possibility of earning his salvation.

He can no longer:

  • make amends for the wrongs of his past;
  • perform good works;
  • be baptized;
  • observe the Law;
  • start a new life.

Only one thing remains for him:
to place all his trust in Jesus.
And it is precisely this faith that grasps grace.
Jesus asks nothing more of him.
He immediately grants him salvation.

Lesson:
The thief is not saved because he lived a righteous life.
He is saved because he acknowledges his sin and places all his hope in the crucified Christ.
His story demonstrates with exceptional power that salvation is entirely a gift from God, received through faith alone.

What these two accounts teach us
At first glance, these two individuals are opposites.

The sinful womanThe thief on the cross
She comes freely to Jesus. He encounters Jesus at the moment of death.
Her faith is expressed through acts of love. His faith is expressed through a simple prayer.
She receives forgiveness. He receives the promise of paradise.

Yet, their salvation rests on exactly the same foundation.
Neither of them can earn God’s favor.
Both acknowledge their need for grace.
Both place their trust in Jesus.
Both receive salvation as a free gift.

Ultimately,

These two accounts perfectly illustrate the heart of the Gospel: Where faith lays hold of the grace offered in Jesus Christ, God freely grants forgiveness, salvation, and new life.

  1. The sinful woman shows us that the grace received transforms the heart and produces a deep love for Christ.
  2. The thief on the cross reminds us that it is never too late to receive this grace.
Together, these two testimonies proclaim the same truth: salvation never depends on human merit, but on God’s grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ.

III- Conclusion

Hebrews 12:2 “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Where faith in Christ lays hold of grace, God performs the miracle of salvation. The sinner is forgiven, reconciled to God, and receives new life. This miracle is not the fruit of human merit, but of God’s grace received through faith.

The sinful woman had no merit to offer. The thief on the cross had no further works to perform. Yet both received the same grace because they placed their faith in Jesus Christ.

Their story reminds us that salvation cannot be bought, earned, or won. It is God’s free gift, offered to all who come to His Son with sincere faith.

Nothing has changed today. The cross remains the place where God’s grace is fully revealed, and faith remains the hand that receives this gift. Where faith in Christ lays hold of grace, God forgives the sinner, justifies him, gives him new life, and makes him His child.

All glory, therefore, belongs to God alone. The Father devised the plan of salvation in His love. The Son accomplished it through His death and resurrection. The Holy Spirit applies it to the hearts of believers, leading them to repentance and faith.

May our lives never be a celebration of our faith, our works, or our merits, but a celebration of the infinite grace of God revealed in Jesus Christ.

Where faith in Christ lays hold of grace
Sola Gratia — by grace alone.
Sola Fide — by faith alone.
Solus Christus — by Christ alone.

And all this leads to the same conclusion:

Soli Deo Gloria — To God alone be the glory.

“To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, forever and ever! Amen.”
